Solar Ovens: Can I Use My Regular Recipes & Cookware?

TerraSano

One of the concerns that I hear most often from people considering the purchase of a solar oven is that they're not sure that they can adapt their cooking for a "new" method.

A good solar oven, such as a Sun Oven, is not cheap by most people's standards. It is an investment that can provide a lifetime of no-cost cooking and wonderful meals. Good news! There is very little that you need to learn or do to become a really good "solar chef".  The really good news is, your favorite recipes that you're accustomed to preparing in your kitchen oven will work exactly the same in a good solar oven. By "good", I mean an oven capable of reaching 350-400 degrees, as your kitchen oven does. The American Sun Oven can do this easily on a sunny da…

Promoting Solar Thermal Cooking at A Rural Region of Iran

Engineers Without Borders - Iran [1-2] organized an education program at Tal-e-Zard village, a poor/rural region located almost 200 Km far from Shiraz, Iran. The team included Razieh Amini nezhad (Food Science and Technology student), Fatemeh Rahimi (Mechanical Engineering student) and Soheil Salimi (Civil Eng. BSc, Environmental Engineering student MSc.) conducted this event. Razieh Amini nezhad and Fatemeh Rahimi encouraged mothers to participate in the program with their girls; and shared past successful experiences of using Solar Cookers in Fasa University and Hafez Girl School with them. Local women, girls and children were the attendees of our program on Friday Aug. 8, 2014.

Soheil Salimi (Founder/President of EWB Iran) lectured how w…

Seminar of “Introduction of Solar Cookers”

The seminar that “Engineers Without Borders-Iran” (EWB-Iran) held on "Research Week" ( Dec. 14 - 20, 2013) at Fasa University highlighted the importance of solar cookers. In this seminar we tried to inform students and professors of different types of solar-cookers and their efficiency. The team included Soheil Salimi (Founder/President of “Engineers Without Borders-Iran”, Lecturer), Razieh Amini nezhad (Food Science and Technology student), Niloufar Nekueian (Mathematics student), Fatemeh Rahimi (Mechanical engineering student) –right to left at the photo above-.
What`s more, we began to propound the idea of using “solar-cookers “in undeveloped villages where aren`t access to gas grid. On the other hand, we interested in introducing an en…

Letter to IOCC

Dear Ms. Tierney (rtierney@iocc.org),

My name is Kat Prentice and am writing to you regarding the IOCC's response to the Haiyan disaster in the Philippines. I am not sure whether your response involves people on the ground, or the support of other NGOs such as the International Red Cross/Red Crescent, etc.

If your response involves the actual delivery of relief supplies, I wanted to bring to your attention the wealth of information available at the Solar Cooking Wiki that could be extremely useful to your staff, and which your staff can use to bring relief to people whose power, water and fuel infrastructures have been heavily damaged.

In the short-term, solar cooking and other integrated cooking methods provide means for people to safely he…

Notoj por Filipinujo / Notes for the Philippines

This is me, thinking aloud about ways to help in the Philippines (and to build a base for future reactions to disasters). Note that SCInet already has reacted in partnership with other groups, so I'm probably reinventing the wheel here (see my thoughts about Haiti, which I need to get back to work on). But I'm thinking anyway.

What I'm thinking about primarily is two responses:

  • Instruction: sending booklets and transmitting PDFs for local printout/distrubtion that teaches people how to build their own integrated cooking/water purification out of scrounged materials
  • Materials: CooKits, WAPIs, and instruction bundled into kits, ready to use.

  • 1 Primary Issues
  • 2 First Thoughts about Actual Physical Stuff
    • 2.1 Instruction Cards

Do, bonvolu havi paciencon.

Everest base camp trek

[[Everest Base Camp trek has been popular among adventurers since Mount Everest was first surveyed in 19th century. Everest Base Camp trek difficulty is slightly strenuous and requires a fair level of fitness before you begin. Most of the trail lies at the altitude over 3 000m, though Mountain mart Trek adventure team has designed itinerary scientifically that avoids the possibility of AMS during entire trek ]]

Mount Everest trek begins from Lukla, after 35 minutes scenic Mountain flight from ancient city Kathmandu. Our Everest base camp trek commences through the Sherpa villages and farmlands gradually rises to Namche Bazaar (3440m.) where couples of nights spend for acclimatization to be familiar with altitude. One of our rest day, we visi…

trekking in Nepal

[[Upper Dolpo trek lies hidden behind the Dhaulagiri Range in Nepal’s mid-western region where snow fed streams run off high mountains but few are perennial. Lower (Outer) Dolpo is characterised by a semi arid topography with deep gullies and narrow valleys while Upper (Inner) Dolpo comprises a vast arid region of rolling semi-desert highlands, a continuation of the topography of the Tibetan plateau. ]]Tibetan plateau.

Dolpo region is most easily reached by a flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj, in the humid south-west close to the Indian border, then to Dolpo’s airport at Juphal. A three days trek up the Phoksundo Khola through a mix of forests and arid landscapes leads to Ringmo and the beautiful Phoksundo Lake. This is Nepal’s deepest lak…

Solar cookers for the first world too?

I am a mechanical designer working from New Zealand. I have recently become interested in solar cookers and am intrigued by the solarcooking Wiki website. My research into this technology has so far led me to hundreds of websites and blogs depicting ultra cheap solar cooking units made specifically for the Third World. This is a fantastic scheme which does wonders for the planet and improves the lives of millions of people. I can't however get over the fact that solar cookers which cost relatively nothing to build only have a limited efficiency and as far as I can see only heat a pot of foodstuff to 120 - 180 degrees or thereabouts. Also there are limitations as to what you can cook in a saucepan / pot with a lid. To date I have addres…

Suitable Pots for Solar Cookers

Hi! We are in South Africa, and with our solar cooking experimentation, we have come across a problem of finding a cheap, safe and effective pot to use with our solar cooker. We have managed to get a small black camping pot, but at a price of R700!! Please can you share with us your ideas.

Thanks!

Down side to Solar cooking

For some reason the weather over this last summer has been mostly wet. This is good in one way, we were coming very close to running out of water and the constant rain has filled up our dams (an almost unimaginable amount of water).

The down side is that I've barely been able to cook anything with my cookit for the last 6 months or more.

Just last week I tried a curry roast chicken and also a pot of mixed vegetables (pumpkin, potato and sweet potato). Both turned out great, and the temperature got up to 130 C for the chicken.

I like the idea of that electric solar oven, because we get intermittent clouds here so the temperature of my cookit goes up and down every time a cloud goes over. the electric oven would need very little energy to ke…

Teaching Solar Cooking

My partner is a teacher. She recently took the solar Cokit in to her class (year 6) and cooked for the entire class. She served up cherios (small hot-dog like sausages with the red skin). The children were amazed at the temperatures it got to, and other teaches said it would be a life changing experience.

Importantly I printed out some signs: "Danger HOT" and "Warning Hot Surface" signs. We got the pictures from the internet, printed and laminated them. I've stuck them to the oven for when I use it at work - better safe than sorry.
