The international organization, FairClimateFund based in the Netherlands, has demonstrated that the CO₂ market can benefit people most vulnerable to the effects of climate change in a fair and effective way. Those with the largest carbon footprint invest in CO₂ reduction projects with a high social impact that meet the requirements of the Gold Standard and/or the Fairtrade Climate Standard. Their projects involving solar cooking have taken place in the refugee camps located in Chad. The FairClimateFund certifies CO₂ savings and facilitates carbon credit sales, and helps find project funding for partners in the field.

Chad is one of the poorest countries in the world and is currently experiencing a refugee crisis. The majority of the refugees come from neighboring Sudan, which has been ravaged by a civil war. More than 1.9 million refugees now live in Chad in 14 different camps. FairClimateFund is active in two of these camps and is seeking investments to expand project activities for the growing number of refugees.

The refugee camps are located in a very dry region where little wood is available. This causes conflicts between the local population and refugees who need the scarce wood for cooking. Women and children have to travel long distances to collect wood and are regularly harassed, assaulted, kidnapped or, in the worst case, never return at all.

FairClimateFund has been supporting projects in the Iridimi and Touloum refugee camps since 2019, helping families with the purchase of a CooKit solar cooker. The CooKit solar panel cooker converts solar energy into heat that is used for cooking. As of 2024, they have distributed 9,000 CooKit solar cookers.
