Frutesol is a Nicaraguan cooperative of women entrepreneurs dedicated to the production of organic, natural food products and cosmetics using solar energy. Founded in 2006, the group focuses on sustainable practices that support both environmental conservation and local economic development.

History[]

Frutesol began in 2006 when a collective of mothers and heads of household in various Nicaraguan communities organized to learn solar dehydration techniques for local fruits such as papaya, banana, peach, pineapple, and mango. In 2013, after discovering an existing trademark in another country under the name “FrutiSolar,” the founders renamed their enterprise “Frutesol.” That same year, two members traveled to Oaxaca, Mexico, to study food dehydration and broadened their skill set in blending native leaves into soups, spices, and consommés. A comprehensive training workshop in 2014 further reinforced their commitment to artisanal processing and solar-based techniques.

Products and Services[]

Frutesol’s product range is divided into three main categories:

  • Dehydrated fruits and native leaf blends preserved using solar energy, available year-round
  • Artisan-made skin creams and soaps formulated with honey, coconut derivatives, and other natural ingredients, free of harmful chemicals
  • Design and installation of small-scale solar dryers and renewable-energy solutions for local producers

Organization and Social Impact[]

Frutesol operates as a cooperative of women entrepreneurs, emphasizing:

  • Economic empowerment of mothers and heads of household
  • Promotion of renewable energy and environmental stewardship
  • Preservation of traditional knowledge and native agricultural products

Their model fosters community resilience by creating sustainable income streams and raising awareness about ecological practices
