The Global Electric Cooking Coalition (GeCCo) is a collaborative initiative aimed at accelerating the transition from traditional cooking methods—such as wood, charcoal, and kerosene—to electric cooking powered by clean energy sources like solar, wind, and hydro.
Purpose and Mission[]
GeCCo seeks to:
- Reduce carbon emissions from cooking, which currently contribute approximately 1 gigaton of CO₂ annually.
- Improve health outcomes by eliminating indoor air pollution, responsible for 3.2 million premature deaths each year, including hundreds of thousands of children.
- Promote energy-efficient appliances such as induction stoves, pressure cookers, and rice cookers.
- Support Sustainable Development Goal 7: universal access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy.
Founding Partners[]
GeCCo is a joint effort by:
- Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP)
- Modern Energy Cooking Services (MECS)
- Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL)
- Energizing Development (EnDev)
Global Impact[]
The coalition was launched during the Africa Climate Summit in Nairobi in September 2023, emphasizing that climate action is a shared global responsibility—not just a concern of the Global North.
