Kimono Solar Cooker Crostata di Susine

The Kimono Solar Cooker

The Kimono Solar Cooker is a panel solar cooker invented by Matteo Muccioli, which has a self-supporting geometry. It is made up of two main optical groups fixed by means of a sliding pin that allows these to be adjusted and fixed in a relative position according to the angle of the sun in the sky.

The inclination of the two main optical groups also involves opening and rotating them, allowing the stove to radiate both from the upper part as well as from the sides of the receiver. The front mirror allows the sun's rays to be reflected from the front of the receiver.

The reflective panels can be made of different materials. Below, cardboard and plexiglass covered with reflective material are used.

At its maximum opening, the similarity with a Japanese Kimono is highlighted, from which it takes its name.

  • May 2023: Kimono introduced to Ethiopia - Designer, Matteo Muccioli, working with several groups, organized an introduction to solar cooking project in Ethiopia, utilizing his Kimono Solar Cooker. He comments; "Heartfelt thanks to the Marche Polytechnic University, Debre Markos University, Arba Minch University of Ethiopia, CVM Comunità Volontari per il Mondo - Ethiopia - Ethiopia , Prof. Giovanni Di Nicola , Professor Claudia Paciarotti , Eng .Tariku Negash for the Wash-UP Project. A special thanks goes to Ing. Nicola Ulivieri who, defying the rainy season currently underway in Ethiopia, made a truly fantastic journey, without which this reportage would not have been possible. As a designer, I consider this collaboration to be one of the most important experiences of my career and the information we are obtaining is allowing us to concretely study the potential of solar ovens as an aid tool in rural areas and are making us discover non-trivial aspects that will allow us to develop new and more effective devices." • November 2021: Matteo Muccioli has designed a cooking pot/greenhouse combination to use with his Kimono Solar Cooker. A glass bowl is seated inside another bowl of the same size. He has added a spacer at the bottom of the lower bowl, and a length of twine at top to manintain an air layer between the bowls. A black pan is fitted into the upper bowl, and has a glass lid added on top.
He is currently working on the development of a new version of the Kimono, the Kimono-P and Kimono Trio, made with curved geometry, therefore concentrated, suitable for applications in small spaces such as window sills and small balconies.
