Potavida SODIS device with built-in UV indicator.

Historically, there has been difficulty confirming when a SODIS water safety device, which uses only sunlight passing through a transparent container, has safety killed harmful pathogens in the decontamination cycle. The standard alternative is to heat water to measured temperature using water pasteurization techniques.

Potavida, a company located in Seattle, Washington, USA, has developed a SODIS 10-liter hydration bag with a built-in UV dosage indicator. The company reports a batch of water is typically ready in about five hours in full sunlight. To use, simply fill the bag with water, place it in the sun, push the Start button, and wait for the indicator's green LED to show that the water is safe to use.

Besides the SODIS device, the company also collects and provides real-time data feedback to various aid organizations, to facilitate better decisions and use of resources.
