When including units of measurement, express the measurement in metric units first, then include Imperial units in parenthesis. For example: "This oven heats up to about 437 °C (225 °F) in an hour." Make use of these template: {{Degree|}}, {{DegreeF|}}, {{CM|}}, {{LT|}}, {{KG|}}, etc.

Abbreviations[edit | edit source]

When using abbreviations for units of measurement (such as "mm" or "in"), insert a space between the number and unit. For example: "33 in" or "35 cm". Do not add a period after the abbreviation unless it is the last word in a sentence. Please do not use apostrophes or quotes to indicate units like feet, minutes, seconds, etc.: use the unit abbreviation (or spell out the unit of measurement, such as "3 cups").

Expression of Degrees[edit | edit source]

Degrees can be used to express:

Temperature[edit | edit source]

Celsius first with Fahrenheit in parentheses. For example: 100 °C (212 °F). Use Template:Degree to do this automatically like this: {{Degree|100}}. For degree ranges, use {{DegreeRange|100|200}}. If you are starting with a weight in pounds, you can enter that into the {{DegreeF|212}} template to make the reverse conversion.

Weights[edit | edit source]

Use the {{KG|2.2}} template to automatically format weights in metric and imperial. For smaller weights, use the {{GM|2.34}}

Lengths[edit | edit source]

Use the {{CM|3}} template to automatically format lengths in metric and imperial. To enter an inch measurement to arrive at the same output, use the {{Inch|3.5}} template.

Volumes[edit | edit source]

Use the {{LT|3}} template to automatically format volumes in metric and imperial.

Latitude and/or Longitude[edit | edit source]

When referencing detailed Latitude and Longitude (such as specific geographic locations), use abbreviations for degrees, minutes, and seconds. Such as "Located at 34 deg, 32 min, 5 sec North".

Angles[edit | edit source]

Use the ° symbol when expressing angles. Use no space between the number and the ° symbol when writing out degrees of Latitude/Longitude, such as: "when using this oven with a sun angle of 60° or higher, configure the oven in the high-altitude setting".

Time[edit | edit source]

Use "a.m." or "p.m." when referencing specific times of the day. Alternately, you can use "AM" or "PM" if you do not want to use periods. Ensure there is a space between the numerals of the hour and "a.m." or "p.m.", such as "...by 10:30 a.m., the oven had reached an internal temperature of 204 °C (399 °F)."

News items[edit | edit source]

  • Whenever a news item is added to an the page of an NGO, individual, or manufacturer, copy the news item also into the News section of the corresponding country page(s) and to the New content.
  • When adding a images to go along with a news item on the Main page, be sure to protect the image to avoid vandalism.

Contact info[edit | edit source]

The goal is to have each set of contact information on only one page of the site to avoid having to update change in multiple places. In general, put the contact info on the NGO and/or Manufacturer page and use {{See|Whereever}} to point to the page that contains the contact info.

Redirect pages[edit | edit source]

When creating a page for an NGOs acronym that redirects to the page with the full name of the NGO, add the "NGOs" category to the redirect page, but no other categories. This will cause the NGO to show up on a list of all NGOs, but will prevent it from showing up twice on the corresponding country page(s).

News vs. Articles in the media[edit | edit source]

On country pages, for example, add articles in the media to the "Articles in the media" section unless they contain newsy material. If so, then add them to news as well.

Deceased promoters[edit | edit source]

Remove all categories except the categories for the country/ies where the person has lived and/or worked. Add the "Deceased solar cooking promoters" category making sure to add the person's last name to the second field in the category pop-up. Also add to the article the "Archived page" category (not the "ArchivedPage" template) also add their last name. This will cause the person's name to appear in the "Archived articles" subsection of the "History" section of the corresponding country page(s) but their name will be removed from all other automatic lists such as {{Category:Individuals}} and their State category.

Archiving pages[edit | edit source]

Whenever it is no longer possible to contact an NGO, Individual, or Manufacturer, then the article can be deleted. However, if the page contains good practical or historical information, add the {{ArchivedPage}} template just under the {{GoogleTranslateLinks}} template at the top of the page. Then delete all categories except those dealing with its geographic location (country, state, etc.). This will cause the entity to no longer appear under contacts on the corresponding country page(s). However, a link to the archived article will show up in the History section of the corresponding country/state page(s).

Featured events[edit | edit source]

Whenever we list an international conference, place it in the FeaturedEvents template. Make sure that this file also contains the line...

This will cause the event to show up in the Events section of every country page so that people find out about important conferences on their own country page. You can also place a short mention of the event in the corresponding country event page, but don't add images there or the image will appear twice on the country page in question.

Marking items as "NEW"[edit | edit source]

When adding a new item to a page add the template corresponding to the month you are adding it, e.g., {{NewApr15}}. This will cause the word "NEW" to appear next to the item until the template is question has its contents removed after one month (in this case on June 1, 2015). At the end of each month, clear all the content from the "New" template from two months before.

Image redirects[edit | edit source]

When you add a new design, make sure the photo is named properly, the image has the same categories as does the page where it appears, and the image page redirects to the article. On the category pages, this allows the image title to be clear and to be clicked to arrive at the article about that cooker type instead of being taken to the image page.

Automatic translation[edit | edit source]

Entire page[edit | edit source]

All pages written in English should have {{GoogleTranslateLinks}} at the top of the page followed by two blank lines. If this template tag is followed by a {{Updated}} tag, then these blank lines can be omitted.

If the page is in any other language, then add {{GoogleTranslateLinksAuto}} template tag. This relies on Google Translates ability to automatically detect the language the page is written in. After you have done this, always test the translation by clicking on "English" and verify that the translation works correctly. Sometimes Google Translate is fooled by the English text surrounding the article text and incorrectly indicates that the page is already in English. If this is the case, then use one of the other translate templates that specify language, e.g. {{GoogleTranslateLinksFromSpanish}}, {{GoogleTranslateLinksFromFrench}}, {{GoogleTranslateLinksFromGerman}}, etc.

Links to individual external pages[edit | edit source]

When linking to individual url in another language, use the {{GoogleLink}} template: {{GoogleLink|http://www.promosol.letchad.org}}. If it is necessary to add text for the link, then use {{GoogleLinkAuto}}, e.g. {{GoogleLinkAuto|http://www.trinysol.com|Trinysol}}. URLs that have a "?" in them (thus a query string) can cause problems. Is this case add "1=", "2=", etc. to remedy this: {{GoogleLinkAuto|1=http://www.trinysol.com|2=Trinysol}}
