Welcome back! Edit

Hi Beth. Nice to see you back online. We've been busy. Tom Sponheim 02:01, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

Making web links Edit

I just discovered that you can make URL links by just placing the URL containing "http://": shows up as

Copyright tags Edit

I added the PD copyright tag to your image Image:Beth-2.jpg. If this is not the correct license, please choose a more appropriate one. See Help:Image copyright tags, or ask me for assistance. Walter Siegmund 04:33, 17 January 2007 (UTC)

Thank you, Walter. I thought I did that when I uploaded it but I guess not. I wonder if there's a way to make the upload form insist on a copyright tag. --Beth Ogilvie 16:34, 17 January 2007 (UTC)
I think, but cannot not prove, that the software occasionally misses a copyright tag. I seems unlikely, but it is fairly often that an image I upload to Wikimedia Commons is missing a tag. I don't think my error rate is that high. However, if it is a software bug, it is an unusual sort. Software tends to be more dependable than humans on such tasks. Please see the comments I added to the Watercooler regarding missing copyrights. Your thoughts are welcome. --Walter Siegmund 16:59, 17 January 2007 (UTC)

Wording of category Edit

Hi Beth. Your idea for categories sound great. I'm just wondering about the wording though. How about "Click here for the complete list of Solar Cooking Wiki articles related to Kenya" (note the "related to" part). Tom Sponheim 18:58, 21 January 2007 (UTC)

I'll change it! Thanks. --Beth Ogilvie 18:59, 21 January 2007 (UTC)

Note the text I added to the new history section of the Country template Edit

[Information for this section was taken originally from State of the Art of Solar Cooking by Dr. Barbara Knudson]

Placement of events Edit

Hi Beth, It' looks like you guys have been busy! I'm just checking in. It's exciting to see so much being done.

I noticed that you had a special page for events. There is an Current Events link in the left-toc where I have been putting them: Current events. Can you move that one event there? Thanks! Tom Sponheim 22:00, 25 January 2007 (UTC)

Hi Tom! Nice to hear from you. I hadn't noticed your Current events link in the left menu before, so I think it's good to have it in the main page as well. We want to help publicize these events. The calendar page I created uses a brand new feature just announced on the Wikia-1 mailing list (sign up on It cleverly uses the Category mechanism to create date-sorted lists of events. I see your list is sorted geographically. It's good to have both. I'll link to yours from the main page and provide a link from there to the calendar version. The Calendar scheme requires a page for each event, which is okay, I think - a page with some details about the event. I'm out most of today - probably get to this over the weekend. --Beth Ogilvie 15:48, 26 January 2007 (UTC)

Adding the news item on Tanzania to the Archive Edit

The item I just added to the Tanzania page might make a good news item in the Archive. Thanks! Tom Sponheim 19:29, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

Done! -- 00:47, 2 February 2007 (UTC)
Whoops - that was me (the one time I hit save without a preview). --Beth Ogilvie 00:48, 2 February 2007 (UTC)

Kenya basket link points to inaccessable secure email site Edit

Can you search the web for this article or copy the text to the wiki? Tom Sponheim 20:36, 2 February 2007 (UTC)

I really like the new Main Page now. Edit

Can you replace the old page with your version? Thanks! Tom Sponheim 01:49, 21 February 2007 (UTC)

This new page is really well though out. You have quite a talent for this. I'm hoping that having a featured article but not a featured photo will work for you. Thanks! Tom Sponheim 22:32, 21 February 2007 (UTC)
May I add my admiration, also! Walter Siegmund 01:53, 22 February 2007 (UTC)
Thank you both. I'm now reconciled to not having the photo in the upper right corner. One impact of removing the photo, though, and of Walt's additions to the featured article section (thank you, Walt) is now there's a big white space at the bottom of the right column. I tried putting the new article box there, but it forced the right column to be too wide, so I put it on Wiki tips instead. (It's also on Add to who's who.) So if you think of something that would fit there... If we don't come up with anything else, we could have the featured photo in the lower right corner... Tom, I assume your objection to it in the upper right was you wanted the Directory, etc., more prominent? --Beth Ogilvie 16:46, 22 February 2007 (UTC)
Right. I didn't want the directory and other links to get lost. I'm not opposed to having a featured photo as long as you can fit it in down below. The photo I mailed you last night would be a good candidate! Tom Sponheim 17:39, 22 February 2007 (UTC)
I used thumb to float text into the white space as an alternative. Note the use of template:clr to force the "read more" note to the bottom. I think it would be good to find a place for featured photo. Not every featured article will have as compelling an illustration as this one. With a featured photo, we might want to make the FA illustration smaller. Best wishes, Walter Siegmund 18:00, 22 February 2007 (UTC)
Walt, when you made the text wrap around the picture in the FA, on my window there were only 5 words to the left of the photo ("associated" didn't fit in the space), then a big gap, then the text continued under the photo. Eventually I realized that you must be using a wider window, and when I widened mine - wow - lots of big spaces. I can see why the space in the FA jumped out at you. (On my screen that all looked good.) This has been a good reminder to try different formats, esp for the Main Page! In the wider format, the empty space in the lower right corner is smaller, tho probably still big enough for a pic. Beth Ogilvie 23:22, 22 February 2007 (UTC)
I tried a number of different widths but none as narrow as the one you used, it would seem. The other variable is font size. With your changes, the page looks good over a large range of font sizes and page widths on my browser (Safari). For the widest window on my screen, the empty space in the lower right corner disappears altogether. You might look at "Today's featured picture" on Wikipedia:Main Page for one solution. However, my suggestion is to let it be for now and come back to it later. It looks pretty good to me. Walter Siegmund 00:55, 23 February 2007 (UTC)

Creating categories Edit

I see I've been adding new categories at random and you have been creating the categories for me afterwards. How do you do this? Tom Sponheim 19:22, 23 February 2007 (UTC)

Click on a red category link, either on a page that references the category or on Special:Categories. This takes you to an edit page for the category. If it's a top level category, just add [[Category:Browse]] and save the page - or write more if the category needs explanation. If it's a country, add [[Category:somecontinent]]. I was thinking, though, of suggesting category cleanup to Brit as a relatively small task she could do every few days or even once a week. de-0 still needs to be done (I guess Walt missed it) and she'd probably want to skip that one, but she could certainly do the countries. If you have other suggestions for her, that'd be great. She doesn't have a lot of time - just half an hour now and then - but it'd be cool to start getting her more involved. --Beth Ogilvie 01:42, 24 February 2007 (UTC)
I fixed de-0. Another low demand task is adding tags to Special:Uncategorizedimages and notifying the uploaders. Walter Siegmund 21:52, 24 February 2007 (UTC)

Hi, thanks a lot for your report on Central. I've answered there. --rieke 17:37, 26 February 2007 (UTC)

Great work on adding photos to country pages! Edit

Hi Beth. Wow. How nice it is to go to the country pages and see the photos you added. Thanks! Tom Sponheim 20:01, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

Thanks, Tom! How far back in the newsletters did you go? I've just done the latest, but I can keep working backwards... Beth Ogilvie 17:39, 5 March 2007 (UTC)
The newsletters are all here. I think I've gotten most of the News You Send text from the latest three newsletters. Thanks. Tom Sponheim 18:46, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

Do you think you could make this change? Edit

As long as you agree: Forum:What_do_you_think_about_changing_"Current_events"_on_the_main_page_to_say_"Calendar_of_events"? Tom Sponheim 18:55, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

On the Vietnam page, I can't tell which story the pictures go with. Edit

Is there a way to link them together better? Thanks Tom Sponheim 03:47, 13 March 2007 (UTC)

Take a look now and let me know if I still need to tweak it. Thanks. Beth Ogilvie 18:22, 13 March 2007 (UTC)

Good idea on the Materials category! Edit

I changed to Main Page to link to it instead of my page. Tom Sponheim 20:07, 13 March 2007 (UTC)

Featured article Edit

Do you have any suggestions for next week's FA? Walter Siegmund 21:19, 19 March 2007 (UTC)

Nice to have you back! Edit

Are you done with your paid work? I created Category:Solar cooker designs as a parent of Category:Solar cooker plans. I've marked the pages that contain or link to plans with both categories. Designs without plans just get the former. Tom Sponheim 19:11, 5 April 2007 (UTC)

Thanks! Not done, but there's a lull so I thought I'd sneak in and do some wiki work. Hard to sneak around here, though. Any word on the proposed name change, etc.? Never mind - just saw your email. --Beth Ogilvie 19:41, 5 April 2007 (UTC)

Can you make the Help link in the left-hand TOC point to Category:Help? Edit

I think this would be a good change to make. What do you think? Tom Sponheim 20:50, 7 April 2007 (UTC)

It's done. --Beth Ogilvie 17:51, 8 April 2007 (UTC)

Solar Cooking:This week's featured article Edit

Hi Beth; Thanks for updating Solar Cooking:This week's featured article. I updated it but must have forgotten to save my changes. Thanks for notifying Mike, also. Walter Siegmund 23:10, 1 May 2007 (UTC)
