Winston Cone Optics Inc., based in Merced, California, USA, has developed a large scale solar thermal water heating system for processing brackish water. Pressurized hot water (the transfer fluid) is sent from the solar array's evacuated tubes to a heat exchanger, providing heat for the distillation of brackish water. The freshwater created helps to reduce demand from other fresh water resources. In turn, helping to maintain the groundwater level in areas of farmland that is beginning to sink from groundwater depletion.
In another application, the hot water created is used for sterilizing equipment at a dairy production facility.
