Women Engage for a Common Future (WECF) works in over 70 countries through a network of more than 250 women’s and civil society organizations. Their activities span multiple regions, focusing on climate justice, gender equality, sustainable energy, and environmental health.
WECF promotes solar cooking as a gender-just climate solution, particularly in rural Morocco, where energy poverty and deforestation pose serious challenges. Through initiatives like FAREDEIC, WECF trains young women technicians to manufacture solar cookers, dryers, and ovens—clean alternatives to firewood and butane gas. These women become “solar ambassadors,” leading energy cooperatives that produce and market solar devices for use in households, schools, and cooperatives. The solar technology is also used to process local products such as argan oil, dried fruits, and fish, helping women-led cooperatives increase their income while reducing environmental impact.
The initiative is supported by technical partners like Four Solaire Développement (FSD) and the National Institute of Solar Energy (INES), and funded by organizations including AFD, ADEME, and the Foundation of France. WECF’s solar cooking work has been recognized internationally, receiving the Gender Just Climate Solutions Award at COP22. By combining clean energy innovation with women’s empowerment, WECF France demonstrates how solar cooking can be a powerful tool for climate resilience, economic development, and gender equality.
